Day 01 : Arrival in Hanoi

Welcome to Vietnam. Vietlanddiscovery’s guide and driver will be waiting for you at the airport to take you toVietnam’s capital, Hanoi. Nothing was planned for this day, allowing you to rest after a long  flight.

Day 02 : Visit of  Hanoi. (B)

On the second day you are goingto visit the most notable cultural sites recensed in Hanoi, known to be one of the most charming city in South-East Asia.

You get to see Indochina General Governor ex-palace, « Uncle Ho » home on stilts, nestled in a beautiful botanical garden as well as Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the one pillar pagoda, build in 1049 and still one of Hanoi’s most prominents symbols.

You will then head for the Temple of Litterature. Founded in 1070, it was the firts vietnamese university. In the ethnological museum, inaugurated by Jacques Chirac in partnership with Paris’s « Musée des Arts Premiers » you will get acquainted with Vietnam’s 54 ethnic peoples. In the museum’s botanical park you will visit traditional houses of some of these ethnic peoples.

You then stroll around Hoan Kiem lake and go through the famous red bridge to reach Ngoc Son temple. To end an exciting day in Hanoi, you will attend the renowned water puppet play. UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, this traditional show illustrates life in the rice paddies and brings back to life the country’s thousands of years old culture.

Day 03 : Hanoi – Mai Chau          (B, L, D)

A drive just more than two hours to the West of Hanois taking you to Mai Chau. Having reached Lac village, inhabited, like the whole area surrounding it, by White Thai ethnic people, you will be warmly welcomed by Madam Nga’s familly in their house on stilts. After taking a rest, you will walk or ride bicycles around the village to immerse yourself within its magnificent surroundings, admiring beautiful paddy fields surrounded by mountains.  You are going to have many opportunities to meet the locals, socialize with them and maybe invited by some of them to visit their homes. You will also visit a brick kiln then learn to weave silk under the expert eyes of the village’s womens.

In the afternoon you will take part in the agricultural activities with your vietnamese hosts. Depending on the season, you will either assist the preparation of the soil with the help from water-buffaloes, the process of rice pricking out, the corn or rice harvest, or plant other vegetables. After dinner with your hosts, you attend a show with traditional dances and songs, savouring a special rice-wine called Can.

Day 04 : Mai Chau – Ninh Binh, Ha Long bay on Land   (B)

You will wake up to the sounds of the village roosters and pigs. After a home-made breakfast, you take the road linking Mai Chau to Ninh Binh. On this trip you will encounter some of the most picturesque vietnamese landscapes. You will reach Van Long towards the end of the afternoon and have lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon you can hop on a buffalo dragged kart or on a bicycle for a two kilometres long journey through typical village, a house of which you will visit. The countryside is wonderful with amazingly peaceful life scenes : kids playing around grand-mothers busy taking care of the youngests, the agitation of local markets, the ducks breedings…You then get on a small row boat to enjoy for two hours the spectacular natural surroundings. You will visit two 11th century temples, one of them being dedicated to king Dinh and the other to king Le. The beautiful gardens around it feature frangipaniers more than a century old. You will arrive in Ninh Binh late afternoon and settle in your hotel. Around 5PM, watching the sunset at Thai Vi temple, in breathtaking natural surroundings. The temple’s guardian might even enhance the magic quality of the atmosphere by playing jarka, a traditionnal vietnamese instrument that seems to have existed there since the beginning of recorded history. You will dine in your hotel’s restaurant.

Day 05 : Discovery of Ninh Binh (B)

In Trang An, after a relaxing cruise on sampan boats, you go on bicycle ride around the Ninh Binh region’s landmark karstik peaks standing on paddie fields and their many shades of green. A narrow path will take you to Mua Cave site. Your reward for climbing its 450 stairs is a breathtaking view of Land Halong Bay.

You will then be heading for the largest cultural site of south-east asia : magnificent, gigantic Bai Dinh Pagoda which carry  over 100 ton golden Bouddhas, its 500 smaller ones,  500 meters long alleys and  500 ton bell. In the company of a local cook, you will go to the nearest market and shop for fresh products that will be used later in cooking lesson. If all goes well (as it always does) you will enjoy a tasty local meal of your own confection.

Day 06 : Ninh Binh – Ha Long bay      (B, L, D)

You get on the road for Ha Long bay, a drive that take you through the Red River delta and during the lenght of which you will be surrounded by vietnamese countryside every day life scenes. In Ha Long bay, you board a traditionnal junk to discover a 1500 sq.km-wide site that includes 3000 islands and rock formations, proudly emerging from the water for everyone to admire their fantastic shapes.   

  • 12h00 : Arrival in Hon Gai port and boarding of a shared deluxe jonque.
  • 13h15 : Lunch is served while the cruise proceeds.
  • Visit of a fisherman’s village. Stop on a small beach for sea and sun bathing.
  •  Sun set on Ha Long Bay. 
  • Around 6.30 pm the vessel is anchored for the night.
  • 19h30 : Dinner is served on board.

Overnight onboard the shared traditional jonque.

Day 07: Ha Long – Hanoi – Hue (B, Brunch)

You will have breakfast on-board, while the cruise proceeds towards the Tunnel Cave, which will be visited on small sampans boats. You will then return on your now familiar junk to visit Bai Tu Long bay. Be back to the dock around 11.45 am, you start heading back to Hanoi for the railway station, in which you will board the SE1-19:00  night train to Hue, the country’s capital under Nguyen dynasty rule (1802-1954), 654 km South of Hanoi. The city that sitting on the banks of " fragrances river " which inspired many poets. There is a melancholic charm in this city due to the palaces, shrines, refined food and the gentle voices of its womens.

Day 08: Visit of Hue       (B, L)

Arrive Hue around 6.50 a.m, you will meet your local guide and driver then transfer to the hotel. A cruise on the romantic Fragrances river takes you to Thien Mu pagoda, build in 1601. You then have lunch in Thuy Bieu village before going on a bicycle ride through gigantic orchards and vegetables plantations. Away from mainstream tourism, you will discover local farmers way of life, visit old garden-houses, the communal house and the ancestors worship place. You have chance to learn the Vietnamese way of gardening right on the side of the river. You will be back in Hue towards the end of the afternoon after having visited the imperial city.

Day 09: Hue – Da Nang – Hoi An (B)

In the morning, visit emperor Tu Duc’s shrine and apreciate its elaborated architecture surrounded by beautiful landscape gardens . The king had it build for himself long before he died and used to call it “my eternity”. It inspires the pleasure when alive far more than the fear of death. You will then discover emperor Khai Dinh’s shrine and its surprising vietnamese-european architeture combination.

You depart after lunch for the ancient port city of Hoi An via the " clouds moutain pass ", stoping on the summit to enjoy the superb panoramic view of the shoreline, stop again to stretch you legs on the ravishing white sanded beach of Lang Co.

By late afternoon you will arrive in Hoi An, unique untouched vietnamese town that becoming a living art and architecture museum. A priceless cultural and historical legacy steams from a city that bore witness to a thriving foreign trade period. You will then check into your hotel and settle for the night.

Day 10: Visit of My Son – Hoi An (B)

You are leaving Hoi An early to day for a day trip. Your destination : the sacred valley of Champa kingdom, My Son. Its temple and “Kalans” are the remnants of a distant period. THe whole complex consists of about 70 bricks and stone made structures, built between the 7th and the 13th century. You will be back in Hoi An around noon. In the afternoon the visit of the city include  antiquities museum, japanese bridge, chinese quarter, Phung Hung house, market and a port that reached its peak of activity during the 15th century, when boats came in from China, Holland, Japan or Portugal to exchange all kind of goods. The final attraction of the day will be Chuc Thanh pagoda, designed by a chinese monk and build in 1454.

Day 11: Hoi An – Da Nang – Saigon (B)

Transfer to Da Nang airport for flight VN1309 (09:30-10:40)to Saigon, vietnamese economic capital. Your guide will welcome you in Saigon’s airport and take you on a tour to the reunification palace, the war museum, Notre Dame cathedral and the central post office designed by Gustave Eiffel. You will also stroll around Cho Lon market in chinese quarter and visit Thien Hau pagoda.

Day 12: Sai Gon – Ben Tre, Mekong delta               (B, L, D)

Ben Tre, in the Mekong delta region, is renowned for its production of coconuts flavoured candies. Upon arrival, a cruise on Ben Tre river will allow you to have an idea of what the people’s life there might be like. Back on land, you will observe the technic used for the production of bricks in Mr. Tu Lo’s brick kiln. You will then visit the coconut product factory before heading for Nhon Thanh village on waterway. Take a walk  in Nhon Thanh will be an opportunity to be a part of its life and to savour fresh fruits. On bicycles later, you will follow paths snaking their way through the villages lined with coconut trees, paddy fields and vegetable gardens as recurring features.

You are going to have lunch with some very friendly locals before reaching the house in which you will spend the night. But it's too early to end the day yet, with your bicycles you will go to Mr. Sau Khanh’s house and admire his ancient objects collection. At the end of the afternoon you can challenge your Vietnamese cooking skill by helping your hosts prepapre dinner.

Day 13: Ben Tre – Long Xuyen    (B, L)

After the usual home-made breakfast, you will ride your bicycle around the local market alleys and visit Phu Nhuan temple. You will hop on a small boat that will take you along Cai Coi canal, towards Hung Vuong, where you land and taking the road from that point. Reaching your destination, Sa Dec, you will visit Kien An Cung pagoda, Huynh Thuy Le’s house and Trung Vuong school. You will then go to Long Xuyen, where you will spend the night.

Day 14: Long Xuyen – Saigon     (B, L)

Early in the morning you will visit Long Xuyen floating market, one of the most beautiful, bustling and authentic of Mekong delta region, opportunity to discover the day-to-day routine of people living in the delta. You will visit Cu Lao Ong Ho, first on foot, then on a small boat through several arroyos. Heading back to Saigon in the afternoon.

Day 15: Saigon – Temple Tay Ninh – Cu Chi Tunnels – Departure (B)

Visit Tay Ninh and Caodai temple, where you’ll have the opportunity to attend a religious ceremony held daily at noon. Colourful and special, this temple is the heart of the Caodaism religion in Vietnam. Jesus, Buddha, Victor Hugo, Winston Churchill and Nguyen Binh Kiem are some of the saints being worshipped here.

Afternoon, tour Cu Chi area that known in Vietnam war before 1975, just 60 km away from Saigon city center, for its network of tunnels, 250 km long, build during the war. You will be back in Saigon late in the afternoon.

Transfer to the airport for flight onward.
